History

The Volunteer Fire Company, founded in 1848 on the initiative of some of the residents of the City, was recognized by the Royal Decree of January 20, 1849 and integrated into the Civic Guard as the 3rd Company.

The Company had been organized for a mere few months when a terrible fire consumed the church of Leuze. The young firefighters stood out by their values, courage and skill, but were powerless before the blazing fire that threatened an entire neighborhood of the city, fueled by flammable material; they had to call to the rescue their comrades in Tournai, Ath and Péruwelz, who only managed to defeat the disaster after a fierce and heroic struggle that lasted two days.

The Volunteer Fire Company of Leuze never stopped growing through constant technical advances. The importance of the growing industrial city and the expansion of hosiery factories and textile mills urgently called for the organization of a first-rate fire company, supplied with fire extinguishers and survival craft for preventing any risk of fire. In 1789, the Company's contingent included 95 men.

On January 1, 1880, the Firefighters of Leuze had the opportunity to help their comrades of Ath the way the latter had helped them in 1848: a terrible fire broke out in a furniture factory in the midst of particularly flammable chopped wood chips; the local firefighters were powerless facing this disaster. The intervention of the Firefighters of Leuze, sent on a special midnight train with all of their equipment, was among the most effective; thanks to their assistance, and that of the Tournai Firefighters - who arrived at the same time - the risk of destruction was brought under control.

The Royal Decree of December 9, 1898 ordered the reorganization of the Royal Civic Guard, eliminating all the special corps of armed Firemen. Fortunately, drawing on the ideas and the set goal of the entire population, the Municipal Council took the grand decision of bringing back the "Municipal Volunteer Firefighters", the company which had been disbanded as a result of the government's decision.

On the 16th and 17th of May, 1998, the Regional Fire Service of Leuze-en-Hainaut celebrated with dignity its 150th anniversary.
